Preheat the oven to 200 °C. Line a baking tray with baking paper.

For the dough, quickly knead all ingredients into a smooth dough (do not knead too long or the dough will be too soggy). Roll out into a rectangle on floured work surface.

Spread the pesto widthwise (horizontally) as a strip down the center of the dough. Top with onion rings, capers, bacon slices and cheese, and finally sprinkle with basil. Cut the ends of the dough above and below the filling strip into evenly thick strips – cutting each “all the way” to the filling strip. Now alternately fold the strips left and right diagonally over the filling to create a braided pattern.

Place the braided bread on the prepared baking sheet and bake in the hot oven for about 30 minutes until golden brown.

Let cool slightly and cut into strips before serving.

If you like, you can also prepare the braided bread with classic yeast dough or pizza dough.
